Nathan's been asking when Christmas is over the last few days. So I told him it was about 2 months away. "Wow, that's not long, 1,2". Hmmmm, yeah, that's about 8 wks. "Oh yeah" (still sounding encouraged). Yeah, about 60 days. "Oh man, that's aaaaggggeeeeessssss". So this evening right before he was heading off to bed he decided to make a calendar of the two months so he could cross off the days (oh boy, it's going to be a long 2 months lol) - especially since he's not going to start crossing off till November. So we got down the calendar and he wrote out November's dates. Then made a start on December and this time wanted to write the days at the top of the page too. He got up to Tuesday before deciding to finish that off tomorrow.
I then asked him if he remembered listening to the story of baby Jesus that we read last year, which he didn't. He then wanted to get the Bible out and read the story of Noah's Ark (since I was tidying up our Noah's Ark puzzle at the time). So we sat down and did that (we are non-Christian so this not a part of our daily life) which lead to conversations about violence and what it was. He was a bit disturbed that God left all the babies and children behind to drown and found it difficult to understand why that would be. I guess I'll be off googling tonight to widen my own understanding when facilitating this sort of discussion!

Oh BOY I love Christmas & have hyped the kids up over the years.
One thing we have done is study with FIAR Cranberry Thanksgiving - book at library. Now every year we have Cranberry Thanksgiving end of November - we then put up tree - maybe you guys might like this tradition too - will help the count down of 2 months.
We visited kirks when Santa arrived.
Took pets to animates to see Santa Hilarious!!!
Visit Kirks Christmas shop & each brought a decoration.
Make Christmas cakes
Sewed their own stockings (a bit older than yours)
Buy a gift for another child same age & put under tree at mall.
Visit the Christmas lights
OOh the best thing ever was make reindeer food & xmas eve sprinkle it on the lawn - they would wake up to reindeer poop on the lawn! I could share some reindeer poop this year if you want GRIN!
One year we were secret Santas to a family & delivered little gifts - even made national news & papers grin.
one more thing.
We used to wrap up (kids helped) Christmas themed story books & open one a night for a Christmas themed story.
Gosh it's fun having little kids at Christmas!!!
ENJOY they grow up too fast
Thanks for the ideas! You sure do love Christmas lol. Last year we had a nice little build up with going to the Carols at the sea, visiting the lights, visited santa. I like the idea of getting a gift for the mall tree and will do that this year.
Kids come up with the best questions don't they!
We love Christmas here - and kiddo is still not too old to go all out :D We don't do a lot of the going out stuff - though we'll see the lights and maybe check out something else christmassy - most of our stuff is at home. Decorations and counting down, lots of baking, visiting and having visitors.
As much as I enjoy getting into the christmas stuff, I *hate* the pre-Christmas stress! Hopefully this is the year I finally learn to let it all go and enjoy myself (here's hoping I get the shopping done early so I can relax!)
When we were reading the Gilgamesh trilogy a couple of weeks ago I learned that "great flood" stories are common among many different tribes and people.
Most civilizations were located among rivers, where flooding is common, so it makes sense.
I thought that was an interesting bit of info - that it wasn't exclusively a Christian story. (We're not Christian, either.)
I love the Christmas Book idea that Leanne spoke of - 'cept we'll have to get some more snow or Yule books for that idea. It's a good one, though!!
