Movie watching

After having read The Wizard of Oz, Nathan has been keen to watch the movie. Well, our 2 movie rental places around here don't have it, so I was pleased to receive in my inbox notification that we were up for another free trial of online DVD rentals. So I snapped up the chance and ordered it through them.

Nathan was right into it and was quick to pick out the differences in the storylines. He was also fascinated to watch his first "old" movie. Funny the things you take for granted. He was upset to think the movie was finishing because it had all the credits at the start. Then wondering why it was black and white. I then explained to him about the strings used to help the Lion's tail move around. They loved the special effects which are obviously quite different to modern day movies that are all that he knows.

We also ordered the movie Whale Rider which was a lovely first introduction to Maori culture beyond the small amount of language usage in our daily lives. Considering my kids are part Maori (on Simon's side), it was nice to talk to them about what was happening and why (the chanting, songs, dances and other customs) since these are not things that we experience in our day to day lives (nor in the lives of family that we visit).
