Playing with fire

We went over to the kids nannie and grampies this afternoon and while there I asked grampie if we could use his camping thermette for the kids to have a go at discovering fire - to demystify it and learn about how to go about it safely. The kids have been right into lighting candles at dinner time and wanting to blow them out. Last winter Nathan was really interested in helping set the fireplace up, so I think this winter he'll be able to do it himself with a little help.

~ We had a spare glass of water if required
~ Grampy supplied us with his water fire extinguisher
~ We talked about striking the match away from us and best technique for getting it to light (after me holding his hand a few times he was amping to give it a go himself)
~ How to build a fire that was going to stay going - it took a few trials!
~ And what happened with the thermette when the fire got hot enough - we could boil the water around the sides (the inside is hollow like a chimney)
~ How he is to only light a fire with an adult, but is free to ask when he wants to do it
